Winners and Losers of NFL Draft Day 1

Updated: Apr 28, 2023

The NFL Draft started yesterday, and there were definitely some surprising picks. As the 31 picks settle into their new cities, I'm here to list off my winners and losers of Day 1.

Winner: Houston Texans

The Houston Texans were longing for Bryce Young but the plan fell through. Instead, they get the next best QB on the board in C.J. Stroud, an insanely accurate QB from Ohio State. They then surprised everyone and traded up to the 3rd pick after giving up a haul. With the 3rd pick, they selected Will Anderson Jr., the best defensive player in the draft and arguably the best overall player in the draft depending on who you ask. The Texans got arguably the best QB and the best defensive player in the draft. The Texans were an easy winner on Day 1.

Loser: Detroit Lions

The Lions started the night with Pick 6 and 18. They then traded out of 6th and got 12th in return. They drafted Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th pick and Jack Campbell 18th. I believe these were both reaches, especially the Gibbs pick. You already have D'Andre Swift and David Montgomery, why draft a RB so high? With the Campbell pick, I believe he can be a good player but you could've traded down to get him.

Winner: Philadephia Eagles

The Eagles just made the Super Bowl and only lost by 3. They then come into this draft with 2 first-round picks (9 and 30). They drafted Jalen Carter and Nolan Smith, two defenders from college football's best defense. Jalen Carter had an argument for best player in the draft and Nolan Smith can contribute right away for a defense that was one of the best last year. The rich get richer and they should be able to make another run at a Super Bowl.

Loser: Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons are one of the worst teams in the NFL. They have many needs to fill and they drafted an RB, a position that you shouldn't draft in the 1st round. Bijan Robinson is a great player but it is not a great pick for a team that has more needs than an RB. The Falcons have a good RB in Tyler Allgeier already in the building who had a promising rookie campaign. There were much better options for the Falcons at 8th, even if Robinson is a great player.

Winner: Seattle Seahawks

The Seahawks also had 2 first-round picks which seems to be a theme for the winners. They picked Devon Witherspoon and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the two top guys at their position in the draft. Some might say Witherspoon was a reach, but he is a great corner and the Seahawks are trying to build back up the secondary. Smith-Njigba is one of the best picks in the first round, and the Seahawks got him where it's a luxury for them and not a need. The Seahawks get an A for this draft.

Loser: Will Levis

One of the biggest surprises of the night was Levis falling out the entire 1st round. Levis had no home for him after Anthony Richardson got drafted by the Colts 4th overall. Levis now is going to earn less money while also having a shorter contract. Levis could've been a top 10 pick if he would've declared last year but now he has to sit and wait, although it won't be for long on Day 2. Levis has question marks, but he has a chance to prove everyone wrong.
